Job Description
The Wall Street Journal is seeking an Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Scientist to join its Research & Development unit, a team who supports the newsroom with experimentation and research. The AI/ML scientist works collaboratively across the newsroom to implement machine learning solutions that aid the newsgathering process.
This is an opportunity to work in a vibrant newsroom and leverage emerging data science techniques to conduct analyses and build tools that promote deeper understanding and differentiation of their journalism. The R&D team is part of the Journal’s Strategy area, which is an incubator for new technologies, audience growth, community and news innovation. The department includes the full range of journalistic talent that makes the Journal one of the leading news organizations in the world — writers, video journalists, graphics designers, editors, product managers, engineers, designers, data scientists, artificial intelligence experts and more — in a lively, collaborative project to discover new offerings of journalistic value.
Tasks/Responsibilities
Support the Lead Technologist and Machine Learning Engineer to develop and implement deep neural network models.
Help identify new data science methods worth exploring, determine the processes and techniques by which they could use them for story development.
Help create a program to educate newsroom stakeholders about data science and journalism.
Must Haves
Academic background in machine learning.
Deep understanding of Python and experience using machine learning and natural language processing libraries including TensorFlow, Scikit LEarn, SpaCy, NLTK, and similar.
Ability to architect and implement pipelines that feed into user-facing applications.
Knowledge of news media, digital journalism, and content strategy.
Experience translating complex ML tasks for non-technical audiences.
Preferred
Strong visualization and presentation skills.
Ability to incorporate NLP and machine learning into full-stack, user-facing applications
