Description

A data platform engineer builds the next generation of tooling for Wayfair’s data ecosystem, partnering across engineering and the business to develop broadly accessible tooling to unlock the power of data for a large user based with diverse skillsets. They are excited to learn about full stack development and big data tooling, including Python, JavaScript, Hadoop, and Cloud computing options. They are comfortable working with both business users and engineers, and understand the challenges users face in extracting actionable business insights from enormous data-sets. These data experts pair data modeling expertise with business understanding and an understanding of the human challenges of the data space to produce dynamic, data-driven tooling that drives value across Wayfair’s multi-billion-dollar business.

What You’ll Do

  • Contribute to the development of key internally developed Wayfair analytic products, including:
  • Job scheduling
  • Forecasting
  • Data cataloging and lineage
  • Anomaly Detection

 

  • Build, schedule, and manage data pipelines from application origin through batch and streaming systems to make it available in this tooling
  • Develop innovative ways of interacting with data at scale, including auto-ML on billion row datasets, natural language processing, and personalized reporting
  • Develop a keen understanding of the needs of a diverse user group to tailor-make fast, intuitive systems blending the best of Wayfair’s proprietary technology and open-source tooling

What You Are

 

  • Excited about unlocking the value of petabyte scale data
  • A desire to develop sophisticated technical applications from the front-end user experience to the back-end system administration
  • Familiar with SQL
  • Excited to collaborate with partners across the business and engineering to understand their needs

What You Have

  • Experienced with a flexible higher level programming language such as Python, JavaScript, or PHP
  • Examples of prior innovation in a fast-paced, independent capacity.
  • Experience with agile development, source control systems, continuous integration and other standards of modern development
  • Bachelors or Masters in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Analytics, Mathematics, Statistics, Information Systems, Economics, Management or other quantitative discipline field with strong academic record.
  • Ecommerce or retail analytics experience a strong plus

What we’d love to see (but isn’t required)

  • Previous work with a full stack application, especially in the analytics space
  • Previous experience with Hadoop and associated query systems like Presto or Hive
