What you’ll be doing:

  • Design, implementation and analysis of trading strategies
  • Exploratory analysis of large datasets, drawing insights and value from complex Big Data
  • Provide prototypes of data handling algorithms and assist with their implementation
  • Development of data loading/ETL processes
  • Build streaming and data analytics pipelines

Engineering at Smarkets:

Smarkets was founded by two software engineers who were interested in applying financial trading techniques to the world of online betting. Engineering remains at the core of their business, and this is reflected in the fact that almost 70% of the company work in engineering or data related roles.

They rely heavily on the following tools and technologies:

  • Data manipulation through Numpy/Pandas
  • Build pipelines of batch jobs with the help of Luigi
  • Matplotlib/Bokeh/Plotly for data visualisation
  • BigQuery/Postgres for data persistence
  • Implementing machine learning models with Scikit-learn (and friends)
  • Docker for containerisation and also running our jobs in production

About you:

  • You’ll have a relevant educational background and/or equivalent experience in a quantitative field (statistics, maths, physics etc.)
  • You’re comfortable with database querying
  • Confident with coding, you’ll have good proficiency with at least one modern programming language and experience in data analysis/machine learning libraries
  • You’ve got familiarity with Linux/Unix shell and a version control system (preferably Git)
  • Interest in sports betting/trading

Bonus points:

  • Knowledge of visualisation tools
  • Knowledge of Apache Spark or other Hadoop data processing tools
