National Grid is hiring a Lead Data Scientist for their Data Science department in Waltham, MA
Job Purpose
National Grid seeks a Lead Data Scientist who is passionate about the role advanced analytics can play in providing their community with heat and power — safely, affordably, and cleanly. At National Grid, you will collaborate with a team of data scientists, data engineers, and MLOps specialists to solve problems across all parts of the business (gas, electric, and customer). You will work in a dynamic organization to turn data into actionable intelligence. The variety and complexity of challenges you will solve is second to none, but most important is the real world impact your work will have on the lives of millions of people.
As a member of the National Grid Data Science team, you will work cross-functionally mining big and small data and applying a variety of analytics techniques (from simple to advanced) to solve business challenges. Example projects the team has worked on include storm-caused electric outage predictions, ML-based gas leak detection, and EV charger installation forecasting. Success in this role requires a strong foundation in:

Key Accountabilities
- Lead major projects from conception to completion, working with multiple teams of stakeholders directly to understand and address their analytic needs
- Collaborate with Data Engineering to identify, extract, and integrate data sets ranging in size from spreadsheets to big data; prepare and clean data for use in advanced analyses
- Employ sophisticated analytics, machine learning, and statistical methods for predictive and prescriptive modeling, forecasting, and simulations
- Develop structured, documented, version-controlled code and work with ML Ops to productionalize models
- Mentor junior Data Scientists
- Contribute toward the strategic vision for shaping the Data Science team of tomorrow
Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required
- Works well in a team.
Qualifications
- Energy industry interest
- Bachelors degree or higher plus 7+ years of experience as a data scientist (or similar) in a business environment. Candidates with an MS and/or PhD require less experience.
- Experience leading projects
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with business stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to translate technical knowledge into business terms
- Fluency in:
- Machine learning tools and techniques
- Python
- SQL
- Be intellectually curious and enjoy learning
- Work well in a team environment
