Our team is passionate about innovating ways to source, validate, and clean complex chemical and raw material data. We work tirelessly to bring the highest grade of information to all of our customers and internal teams. Our goal is to become the industry’s source of truth and the gold standard for chemical & supplier information. As our first data science leader, you’ll be instrumental in helping us achieve this. You’ll work closely with Valdera’s leadership team and other key stakeholders to implement a data science tech stack. You’ll build solutions to address some of our most challenging data problems, like building programs to continuously acquire data from various sources with high accuracy and fault tolerance. You’ll be working with internal and external data to build models to drive business insights for our organization, and our customers’ businesses, ensuring quality data is at the forefront of all decision-making within the company. You’ll build dashboards and insights analyses, and work with internal customers to address their data needs. This is an opportunity to go from 0-1 in helping us build out our supply & demand flywheels. We’re looking for someone who can be a strong technical leader and mentor to other members of the team as we grow.

In this role, you’ll do the following:

  • You’ll continuously investigate the critical business needs of Valdera’s users and internal teams to design effective data solutions
  • You’ll mine data from multiple sources and apply your knowledge in data cleansing and scrubbing to improve the quality and usability of Valdera’s chemical and supplier data in our applications
  • You’ll design the right set of experiments to evaluate the speed at which our data is acquired, cleaned, enriched
  • You’ll develop ways to continuously monitor and analyze the quality of data across stages of our data pipelines.
  • You’ll build and maintain dashboards that report metrics from data pipelines, models, and product applications across multiple teams
  • You’ll take ownership of monitoring these metrics to identify areas for improvement on a frequent basis and to develop new ways to continuously enrich data for our product applications
  • You’ll develop predictive models and analyses to help our systems make effective matches between buyers and suppliers
  • You’ll aggregate and communicate your findings to drive informed and timely decision-making that improves the way our products are created, executed, and adopted
  • Lead the re-design and re-construction of the data layer that empowers internal and external users to access accurate information on suppliers

You have the following required skills & experience:

  • Strong programming skills (Python preferred, and bonus points for JavaScript)
  • Proficient with advanced data science techniques such as data cleansing and predictive modeling for enterprise grade product applications
  • Ability to break down high level business problems into concrete analytical solutions
  • Experience owning the overhaul of large, complex external datasets with irregularities/incomplete gaps to make them usable for enterprise applications
  • Experience working with unstructured internal and external data sources (beyond internal product, marketing, or financial analytics)
  • You are comfortable transforming raw data to build your own datasets when necessary
  • You optimize for using the right tools to get a job done with maximum efficiency and are familiar with technologies for modeling, training, and text analysis (TensorFlow, PyTorch etc.)
  • Strong examples of breaking down ambiguous challenges into achievable roadmaps
  • Track record of executing large, long-term projects to solve complex business problems
  • Master’s degree or PhD in a quantitative discipline preferred (e.g. Statistics, Computer Science, Biological Computation, Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Engineering) or equivalent practical experience
  • 5+ years of work experience in data analysis related field
  • Strong attention to detail: you are able to juggle, navigate and track multiple projects/requirements at once, while driving them to completion
  • A sense of ownership and thoroughness: you proactively plan your own projects, follow up on action items to ensure that no balls are dropped, and meet all critical milestones
  • A flexible, can-do attitude: you can and will pivot as needed, you are excited to try new ways of doing things, and you are ready to share ideas to refine our recipe for success
  • Your start up mentality: you are excited about playing a role in building and growing a high-growth tech start-up company

Nice-to-have skills:

  • Some experience with Natural Language Processing / Natural Language Understanding (or other types of modeling)
  • Early stage tech start-up experience, going from 0-1
  • Experience leading or managing a data science team

The typical salary range for this role is $135,000- 165,000 per year, with a semi-monthly payroll cadence. Salary ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, job level, internal equity, and budget.
